Rick Deckard
Rick Deckard (portrayed by Harrison Ford in Blade Runner) is a break from tradition within his world and fits that aspect of a protagonist to a dystopian story. As a bounty hunter, it is Deckard's job to hunt down and kill rouge androids that have escaped from their handlers, often using violence to achieve this. However, unlike most other people, Rick begins to sympathize and empathize with androids as the story goes on. No one else in his society feels much of anything for androids, they're just disposable tools who happen to look like humans. Rick however feels very sorry for the synthetic humanoids, partially due to their built in kill switch, accelerated cell degradation that causes the android to die within a few years of its "birth." Another characteristic of a dystopian protagonist that Rick possesses is an inability to realize anything is wrong with his society until a trigger incident snaps him out of his generally comatose state. Rick is happy to go about his day and complete his job until an encounter early in the story that sends him into a sort of downward spiral. A similar thing occurs in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, in which Guy Montag is perfectly content with the life he leads until his illusions are broken by an encounter with a minor character. Rick is not a particularly devout follower of Mercerism, only connecting to the Empathy Box every few months. This sets him apart from much of the population, as many of them have a strong dependence on the comfort that Mercerism brings. Shortly into the novel Rick becomes depressed after reflecting on his life and circumstances, as well as the society that he lives in.
